Conferencia: “The role of language assessments in closing (or maybe narrowing…) the language gap”

Presenta: Leonor M.ª Martínez Serrano

We know that closing the language gap is a complex aspiration. Learning contexts, aims and methods, personal and social factors, and ways of quantifying and measuring learning make for a complex set of variables. In this talk, we will look at the last item on the list, language assessments, and consider the huge role they play in the teaching and learning of languages.

We will see how a language assessment is both the rudder that steers the ship and the wind the blows in its sails. We will discuss how the choice of an assessment destination dictates the type of ship we build; how a more integrated skills approach can shape our learning voyage; how important it is to have a valid map that describes all of the considerations for our journey and reliably measures progress; and we will discuss how digital technology may be the motor that revolutionises our learning voyage, or in the hands of some outdated assessment practices, it could be the reason why, at some point in the future, we run onto the rocks.

Absolutely no previous sailing experience is required for this talk.
