1st International Conference on Language Gap and Digital Competence: Challenges for the 21st Century

Córdoba (Spain) / 20 - 21 June 2018

The 21st century is the century of information and, therefore, assuring language learning and digital competence development for everyone is an essential priority in the context of international education policies. Accordingly, the fundamental objective of this International Conference will consist in reflecting on the so-called ‘language gap’ (Johnson & Zentella, 2017) as well as the ‘digital gap’ (Hargittai, 2010). These two phenomena are caused by the economic disparities derived from the global crisis, and they both affect negatively certain population groups, especially those suffering from unemployment in Andalusia. In this light, the latest trends in second language teaching and learning processes on the international scene and their corresponding best practices will be addressed in this 1st International Conference on Language Gap and Digital Competence: Challenges for the 21st Century, mainly dealing with aspects related to language gap and digital gap, digital competence, accessibility and the use of ICT in second language teaching.

PROPOSAL SUBMISSION

Welcome of the Rector

The University of Córdoba is pleased to organize and host in its Rectorate the 1st International Conference on Language Gap and Digital Competence: Challenges for the 21st Century. This Conference involves a great number of renowned and prestigious experts and participants.

Now more than ever, the celebration of this Conference arises as an unavoidable event for the international scientific and educational community. National and international organisations (UNESCO, OECD, the Council of Europe, the Spanish Ministry of Education, and the Regional Government of Andalucía – Junta de Andalucía, among others) highlight the vital importance of the digital competence and second language teaching/learning, both for the understanding of peoples and societies, and for the commitment to peaceful coexistence.

From the University of Córdoba, together with the rest of the organizing and collaborating institutions, we are convinced that this 1st International Conference on Language Gap and Digital Competence will mean a shared space to exchange experiences and research towards the development of the ICT competence and language teaching/learning through action, as well as towards the dissemination of its results.

As the Rector of the University of Córdoba, I am pleased to support this initiative from its very beginnings. For this reason, let me use this space to send an invitation to all participants, speakers, collaborators and attendants to make of this International Conference on Language Gap and Digital Competence a place for reflection, exchange and innovation towards a relevant and international type of education. This is an absolute priority for those of us who, with heart and soul, devote our lives to the education of the 1st century young generation.

Be, therefore, these words a warm welcome to the participants of this International Conference on Language Gap and Digital Competence. The University of Córdoba is also your house: feel welcome and let us know the conclusions derived from this conference.

José Carlos Gómez Villamandos, Rector of the University of Córdoba.
Plenary sessions will take place in the main auditorium and will involve all conference participants.
